Lutz Heinrich von Muehlen died at home on February 9, 2021, at the age of 91 from
complications of Alzheimer’s Disease. He was born in Dresden, Germany on May 25,1929 to
Walrat and Alice v.u.z. Muehlen. He lived his youth in Berlin and Goehren, Germany; Paris,
France; and Basel, Switzerland.
He studied philosophy in Paris before attending medical school in Germany and Austria.
He immigrated to Baltimore, Maryland in 1959 and did his internship at St. Joseph’s Hospital
and his psychiatric residency at the University of Maryland Psychiatric Institute where he taught
residents until his retirement at age 70. During different periods of his career, he practiced at
University of Maryland, St. Joseph’s Hospital, the Veteran’s Administration hospitals in both
Baltimore and Perry Point, and at Fallston Hospital. He maintained a private practice in
Baltimore until 1978 when he moved to Havre de Grace, Maryland and practiced in Havre de
Grace and Bel Air.
Throughout his life he had an active interest in philosophy, art, language, world history and
politics and enjoyed the conversation with friends and family on these topics.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Peter von Muehlen who lived with Lutz
and his family prior to Peter’s death.
He will be missed by his wife of 53 years, Jennifer (Tarring) von Muehlen, his daughter, Laura
von Muehlen and her daughter, Rebecca von Muehlen; his son, Stephan von Muehlen and his
wife, Anna and their sons Sheppard and Conrad Larson von Muehlen; his nephew, Oliver von
Muehlen and his wife Claudia and his daughters Milena and Maya von Muehlen, his niece,
Constance von Muehlen and her wife Golden and daughter, Meta. Both Oliver and Constance
lived with Lutz and family during parts of their youth. He will be remembered by his brother-in-
law, Henry W. Tarring II and his wife Linda and his sons, Ty, Todd, Tracy and their families and
by his sister-in-law, Sandra O’Neill and her sons and daughters, Patrick, Maura, Carrie, Michael,
Alison and Megan and their families.
His family will celebrate his life at a time when the world is once again a safe place to gather.
